Nosbaum Reding vous invite à découvrir la première exposition personnelle dans une galerie luxembourgeoise de l’artiste portugais Nuno Lorena (né en 1966 à Lisbonne). Pour cette occasion, l’artiste, qui a suivi des études de décoration et d’architecture d’intérieur avant de se consacrer pleinement à la pratique artistique, a réalisé une série de dessins inédits de différents formats sur des thèmes inspirés de la nature. Figurant des animaux ailés – papillons, aigles, vautour – ses œuvres se revendiquent de la tradition du réalisme pictural tout en incitant le spectateur à reconsidérer sa conception de la représentation figurative.
En effet, si les dessins de Nuno Lorena sont majoritairement basés sur des photographies, ils conservent toujours la marque de la main de leur auteur : « Le photoréalisme ne m’intéresse pas », explique celui-ci. « Je ne veux pas être l’esclave du modèle photographique. Je m’en inspire jusqu’à un certain point, puis je le mets de côté et j’essaie de voir ce dont le dessin a besoin pour exister en tant que tel, avec une identité qui lui est propre. »
Alors que le choix des motifs s’opère selon des considérations avant tout subjectives, les œuvres récentes de l’artiste témoignent d’un penchant pour des sujets liés à la nature tels que paysages montagneux, plantes ou animaux. Les dessins présentés chez Nosbaum Reding ont été réalisés au fusain, la technique de prédilection de l’artiste – une préférence liée selon lui à son intemporalité : « Je suis fasciné par ce qu’on peut faire avec un outil aussi primitif que le fusain, qui est essentiellement un morceau de bois brûlé. »
En observant les dessins de Nuno Lorena, le regard oscille entre le réalisme déconcertant du motif et les détails filigranes de l’exécution picturale qui trahissent la signature de l’artiste. S’appuyant sur un vocabulaire pictural en constante évolution, ils incitent le spectateur à changer sans cesse de perspective pour en saisir toute la complexité.

Indeed, while Lorena’s works are predominantly based on photographs, they always retain the mark of their maker’s hand: ‘I’m not interested in photorealism’, explains the artist. ‘I don’t want to be a slave of the photographic model. I follow it up to a certain point, but then I put it aside and try to see what the drawing needs in order to exist as such, with an identity of its own.’
While Lorena’s choice of motifs is based on various, often subjective factors, his portfolio of recent works suggests a penchant for nature-related subjects such as mountains, plants or animals. The drawings shown at Nosbaum Reding were executed in the artist’s favoured medium, charcoal – a preference he puts down to its timelessness: ‘I’m fascinated by what you can do with such a primitive tool as charcoal, which is essentially a piece of burnt wood.’
When looking at Lorena’s drawings, the gaze oscillates between the spectacular lifelikeness of the motif and the intricate painterly details that reveal the artist’s signature. Drawing on a constantly expanding pictorial vocabulary, they ask the beholder to ceaselessly switch perspectives in order to grasp their full complexity.
