Informations

Since the early 1990s the acclaimed Luxembourg-born painter Tina Gillen has been developing a varied pictorial oeuvre that builds on the tension between abstraction and figuration to reflect the complex relationships between reality and representation. Her strangely abandoned settings focus on visible manifestations of human activity (houses, tents, roads...) and fragmentary or stylised landscapes overlaid with geometric visual elements that complicate the reading of the image.

In her recent works, the artist has been focussing on natural phenomena that lie beyond human control. The exhibition at Nosbaum Reding explicitly refers to a force of nature with equivocal powers: a threat to man, the wind is also an important supplier of renewable energy. Following its convoluted paths, the artist presents a series of paintings and works on paper whose motifs and titles - Sealevel, Arctic Forecast, Shelter ... - allude to the greatest danger the world faces today: climate change. By doing so, she picks up a thread developed in earlier works such as, for instance, Rain or Shine (2013), a series based on images of flooded houses.

The works gathered here were made in the wake of a research project that combined artistic and scientific approaches in an attempt to formulate pictorial responses to the current environmental crisis. How can artistic practice account for the rapid environmental changes that threaten life on earth? In these works, whose painterly-poetic overtones derive from a subtle play with formal rigor and gestural sensuality, Gillen captures the beauty and fragility of nature through its material and immaterial expressions.

Tina Gillen (born 1972 in Luxembourg, lives in Brussels) studied at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna and the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Antwerp. Her work has been presented in numerous solo exhibitions (BOZAR Brussels, Mudam Luxembourg, M-Museum Leuven, Städtische Galerie Remscheid a.o.) and group shows (Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, St. Wendel Museum, Saarländische Galerie Berlin, Künstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin, Plateform Garanti Istanbul, Wiels Brussels...). Currently her work is on display in the exhibition Paintings from the 1980s and 1990s: Mudam Collection at Mudam Luxembourg. The monographic catalogue Tina Gillen: Necessary Journey was published in 2009. The catalogue titled Echo was produced as part of the artist's exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels in 2015.
